Vaseline on the eyelashes is the best alternative to mascara – and is even said to replace a lash lift
TikTok not only manages to give new products a real hype moment, but also to offer tried and tested things a platform – such as Vaseline. There are many reasons to keep a jar of fat cream in the beauty closet. One of them: to also use them for the eyelashes. How and why did I test.
Lash lift hack with Vaseline: This is behind the hype for the eyelashes
That Vaseline can have a positive effect on the eyelashes, is no secret (here are five reasons why). But TikTok is trying to make me believe that the product even has a similar Effect like a lash lift should have – and I couldn’t imagine that at all. At least not until I get the whole Before and after pictures seen in the TikTok videos.

At the latest after the “slugging” trend, where vaseline been applied all over our face overnight to lock in moisture, many of us have the oily cream back on our radar and a jar of it in the bathroom at home. Of course it makes sense, too to try this trend. My first thought: if this really works, I’ll not only save myself money, but it’s also a gentler way of curling my eyelashes than with a lash lift.
Vaseline on Lashes: Can It Really Replace a Lash Lift?
Beauty tiktokers say the petroleum jelly combined with an eyelash curler should make lashes look fuller, curlier and darker. Sounds more like a good alternative to mascara than a lash lift to me at first, to be honest, but I’m happy to be proven wrong.
It is of course important that you don’t get any of the Vaseline in your eyes, this is of course no different with a lash lift or mascara. But to really avoid this, I opt for the variant of putting the Vaseline on the eyelash curler and not directly on the eyelashes with my finger. In this way, a certain distance from the eye can be maintained. However, contact lens wearers should be really careful and even suspend this TikTok trend. Otherwise, petroleum jelly is safe to use around the eye. Still, I’ll be careful – better safe than sorry.
The self test
For my self-test, I grab my Mac Cosmetics eyelash curler and a can of petroleum jelly. I scoop up some of the Vaseline with my (clean) finger and put it on the soft cushion of the eyelash curler before curling my lashes with it – as I said, this helps to keep a certain distance from the lid or eye. After about 15 seconds it’s all over. The result can be seen here:

My honest conclusion about the lash lift hack
You definitely see one huge before and after effect – and I love him. It looks natural, but the lashes appear fuller and darker without any mascara. The shine of the Vaseline makes it possible and actually lasts longer than expected. In the first half of the day, the eyelashes sit like one, but after that you notice that the momentum decreases and the eyelashes bend back into their original shape. But I think the hack is definitely a great, natural alternative to mascara — especially for a no-makeup look. Admittedly, I wouldn’t wear eye shadow on my lid if I had a layer of fat on my eyelashes, as there is a high probability that it will lose it.
But I find that the hack does not replace a lash lift. You’ve had something of the beauty treatment for a long time, so I don’t really understand the comparison. Sure, with the Vaseline you have the effect of a lash lift for a short time – but this disappears after about 4-5 hours (at least for me). The purpose of the semi-permanent eyelash perm is that you have something of it for a long time. So I would rather say that the hack is a natural alternative to mascara.
