2. Mistake: Being confused by the size information
Normally you wear size 38 and suddenly you don’t even fit in a 42 anymore? Don’t be frustrated, these are just numbers! Every jeans label has its own sizing principle. What’s a 29/32 on label number one can mean a 31/34 on the next. Therefore, when trying them on, always pay attention to the fit and completely ignore the size information. Otherwise it frustrates you for absolutely no reason.
3. Mistake: Not taking enough time to try on
Anyone who just scurries into the changing room and is out again in three minutes is very likely to regret their jeans purchase at some point. On the other hand, if you walk a few steps with the jeans you have tried on, sit down, squat down and stretch a little, you will notice much more quickly whether the cut, fit and material are really optimal for you.
4th mistake: Ignoring the rest of the outfit
When buying trousers, most people only pay attention to whether the model fits. It doesn’t matter how it harmonises with the rest of the outfit. For example, cropped cuts can look like you’re wearing “high water” with socks or bare feet in the dressing room. But in combination with ankle boots with a high shaft (which are waiting for you at home), the cropped leg length suddenly makes sense – and looks great!
5. Mistake: Ignore the rear view
In the changing room, you usually only take a quick look over your shoulder to check how the new jeans fit on your buttocks – but the picture you get is distorted. It is therefore best to ask the shopping companion if they can take a photo with their smartphone. Alternatively, you can photograph yourself over your shoulder in the mirror.
6. Mistake: Not paying attention to the back pockets
Small addition to mistake no. 5, because the decisive factor in the rear view is above all the fit and the size of the back pockets of a pair of jeans – whether the rear looks tight and crisp depends entirely on the fit and cut of the pockets. As a rule, the bigger the pockets, the bigger the butt looks and the deeper and more slanted they are placed, the “hanging” the bottom looks.
7. Mistake: Ignoring ablutions
Dark colors contour, light ones add volume – a simple fashion rule. Dark jeans (preferably unwashed) make the legs appear narrower, for example, and denims with light washes, faded areas or embellishments such as patches or embroidery provide ‘volume’ and immediately look more casual and looser.
8th mistake: Not paying attention to the waistband height and the cut
Jeans with a high waist put the focus on hips and bottom. If you don’t want to emphasize these areas, it’s best to wear jeans with a medium-high waistband, which stretches the upper body.
9. Mistake: Seeing the material as unimportant
How jeans behave when washed depends primarily on the fabrics used and their quality. Jeans with a high cotton content shrink faster and stronger than those with a high elastane content. Also, they don’t sag much over time – unlike jeans, which have a high synthetic fiber content (they tend to buckle over time). So if you are thinking that your slightly too tight jeans will expand over time when you buy them, you should check the material composition.
Mistake 10: Not knowing the 5 second hack
Anyone who, despite the nine rules above, can only take a little time to buy jeans, should know these two simple tricks to be able to quickly check whether a pair of pants might fit or not:
- Clench your fist and tuck your forearm into your waistband. If the arm fits in from elbow to fist, the pants should also fit well on the hip. Alternatively, you can also put the waistband of the jeans around your neck.
- To check the length of the jeans, grab the ends of the jeans with both hands and stretch your arms apart. If the crotch sits directly under your chin, the leg length is ideal.
