Kim Kardashian goes makeup-free, sparking a debate about filters on social media
Kim Kardashian, the queen of contouring, is being hailed on social media for her recent “unfiltered” selfie. We mainly took a closer look at the comments below, but first things first.
Kim Kardashian: This makeup-free selfie sparks debate in the comments
On March 6, the 42-year-old reality TV star shared a makeup-free selfie straight from the dentist’s chair, wearing pink disposable bibs and all. The Skims founder’s fans flooded her comments with the usual jokes, admirations, and emojis, but many also began debating the use of (beauty) filters — or lack thereof.
“Yes a selfie with no filters!!!” one fan replied to the picture, while another wrote: “Nice to see Kim’s skin without makeup or filters.”
However, many felt that even a more natural-looking picture of Kim Kardashian would likely need post-processing before posting: “Look!!! Let’s shut up all her haters she’s unfiltered, unedited and still the most beautiful of all time,” one fan wrote. Another responded directly to this comment, writing: “I love Kim and she’s beautiful but that’s it still edited.”

That’s why it’s always wrong to assume other people’s looks
Here are two things that seem to have been completely forgotten in the comments below Kim Kardashian’s selfie in the whole debate:
- Women deserve to post a selfie without being bombarded with comments and questions about filters, fillers, botox and the natural signs of aging.
- There is nothing wrong with using filters, fillers and/or botox, nor is there anything wrong with not using them.
One more thing that’s (sadly) becoming clear: Kim Kardashian and other stars have contributed to our culture’s distorted view of body image and aging by long denying or leaving uncommented the use of all these treatments and filters. In September 2022, for example, she denied ever growing a single gray hair, although there are actual shots of her stylist asking her permission to pluck one out.
What we’re saying is, filtered or unfiltered, Kim Kardashian is a beautiful woman. But she’s also a billionaire businesswoman who can (and is allowed to) afford some treatments to look the way she does. Still, that doesn’t give anyone the right to pillory and judge her for her looks. Kim can do whatever she wants, and at the end of the day, she doesn’t hold anyone accountable. Still, keep in mind that if you scroll through her feed, she might deny the odd beauty treatment.
