The post recorded over 1,500 comments on July 4, 2023 – less than 24 hours after it went live. And as always, the haters are the loudest: almost 400 people like a comment that describes their dress as “inappropriate”. Many users taunt Rita Ora with “You are better than this” comments, directly blaming her for making a mistake in showing so much skin.
Another lowlight is a comment that translates to, “I don’t understand the need to dress in a way that reveals your genitals. There is no doubt that you are beautiful, but shouldn’t your body be something private for you and your partner?” Wow.
By the way: Because of the no-nipple Instagram policy, Rita Ora had to blur her breasts slightly in the post. Comments were not long in coming: “You are wearing an outfit in public that you are not even allowed to post on social media without violating the guidelines.” But then, aren’t the guidelines the problem? Yes! Because if Rita Ora were a man in a dress like that, it wouldn’t be a problem for Instagram: the anti-nipple directive only discriminates against women.
That’s why it’s not okay to comment on other people’s bodies and clothing choices
There are, of course, some problems with the above comments, which are just an excerpt of many others of this kind. First, the obvious fact that each of us should have the freedom to choose what he:she wears. Without having to worry that your choice of clothes will make you a target. It starts on a small scale with such comments and hate speech on social media and ends on a large scale with the question “What were you wearing?”, which is still asked of rape victims to this day.
On the other hand, it is of course the still progressing sexualization of the female body and above all of breasts, which of course primarily resonates with such comments. Yes, women have breasts. No, deciding whether to show these or not has nothing to do with that paint gauze and the effects on it – that’s what everyone should finally get in their head. So when Rita Ora decides to wear a naked dress that shows her breasts prominently, that’s one person’s business: Rita Ora.
