What is the effect of Brazilian lymphatic drainage?
“Brazilian lymphatic drainage not only has a slimming effect by releasing accumulated tissue fluid, but the health effect is also particularly interesting,” explains Sigrid Ilumaa. “The immune system is strengthened and the gastrointestinal tract is balanced. Muscular tension can also be relieved and fascia can be relaxed again. However, if you are mainly looking forward to a direct slimming down – for example like the stars before events – you have to know that this effect does not always occur or occurs later: “It may be that the full effect only shows up after 24 hours.” According to Ilumaa, he stays there for about seven days.

What distinguishes it from normal lymphatic drainage?
“Brazilian lymphatic drainage involves working with a lot more energy,” explains Ilumaa. “In addition, I can really take my time for the patients, as I treat up to 90 minutes.” But there are also similarities: The respective problems of the customers are always addressed, for example if someone has lipoedema or is due for post-operative care, the pressure is significantly lower. It always depends on the problems.
How often should you do Brazilian lymphatic drainage?
“If you want to do something permanently for your health, you should have regular treatment,” explains Sigrid Ilumaa. “I recommend a treatment at least once a month, which involves emptying the ‘bin’. Without follow-up treatment of a disease that provides for a weekly frequency, a 14-day rhythm is even more optimal.”
When not to do Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage?
“Pregnant women in the first trimester are advised against it,” explains the expert. “That’s because the first trimester is just unsafe.” After the first trimester, it is even beneficial to get rid of ballast and water by stroking, for example, in the case of water retention. Breastfeeding isn’t a problem either, and neither is cycle phase (unless you want to urinate before your period). “If there are diseases, you always have to discuss the treatment with the doctor in advance.”
Professional lymphatic drainage put to the test
Today I am allowed to test a treatment with Sigrid Ilumaa. When I arrive at her studio, I slip into fluffy slippers and we discuss the treatment steps over tea. Then, undressed, I sit down on a couch under a heat lamp – the treatment begins.
