Armpit hair: 12 stars normalizing what should have been normal for a long time
The issue of female body hair is one that seems to always be with us, even though hair is completely natural – and although much has been done to destigmatize it since the ’60s. And when it was announced a few years ago that body hair was back in vogue again, we were surprised, because: hair that just grows like that shouldn’t be considered hip in order for it to feel acceptable. Although, of course, anything that helps women feel more comfortable in their own skin is a good thing.
So when Rachel McAdams recently specifically requested that all images from her latest photoshoot be only “minimal” retouched — including her armpit hair — we were ecstatic. “I’m wearing latex underwear for this shoot,” she revealed. “But I have had two children. That’s my body and I think it’s important to reflect that in the world.”
Shaving armpit hair – yes or no?
The younger generation is also setting a good example. According to a recent study from the UK, almost one in four women under the age of 25 has stopped shaving their armpits. But this long-overdue challenge to societal norms of female beauty would not have been possible without the women who defied convention.
To further fuel this trend, here we spotlight 12 female celebrities who are campaigning for armpit hair — and destigmatizing body hair in general — by sporting and showing themselves unshaven in public.
